Nicole Maines suits up as the first ever transgender superhero on the popular series Supergirl. Nicole plays as Nia, a transgender superhero “DREAMER”. Her character is a news reporter at the media company CatCo, who is taken under the wing of fellow journalist and superhero Kara Danvers, a.k.a. Supergirl (played by Melissa Benoist).
Nicole Maines is also a real superhero in actual life. She has been an activist long before she was an actress who has already managed to change the world. When she was a teenager, Maines fought and won a court case against her school district that declared it was unconstitutional to ban transgender students like her from using their chosen restroom.
When asked about her role, she replied “When cisgender men play transgender women, it creates an image of “men wearing dresses” that can affect people’s perceptions. “When we have trans actors play trans characters, people can look onscreen and say, ‘OK, this is what trans is.”.
